FFT – Functional Fitness Training

Functional Fitness Training is designed to deliver exactly what it says on the tin – you train to have the most functional body you can achieve. Plus you train together with a bunch of motivated fellow FFTers, which creates a great group energy and a real community feeling.


What is Functional Fitness?

The human body is designed to cope with a huge range of physical actions, movements and activities. Except that most of those activities have been removed from our day to day existence. We don’t need to chase (or run away from) mammoths anymore. We have cars, TVs, remote control everything – is it any wonder some of us can’t even get out of a chair without a struggle? Let alone sit on the floor and then stand up easily, or run for a bus.

Too many of us lack balance, strength, stamina – all the elements of core fitness – where our musculature is strong enough to easily handle our body weight. The ability to lift, bend, stretch, reach and run well all makes everything you do simple and easy.

Even moderately fit people feel they can improve their performance and really hone their physical capabilities. And that’s what FFT is all about – giving you the strength, flexibility and agility to cope easily with life’s physical demands. Whether it’s playing a sport, or just playing with the kids – walking the dog or hiking the Pennines. Whatever your goal, getting functionally fit is the ideal way to make sure you’re in shape to achieve it.

Your coach is: Pete Lamb

Pete is one heck of a coach and he can’t wait to start working with the VK Gym family.

He’s got a stack of qualifications and experience, so you’re in really good hands.

Here’s some of his achievements:

  • Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach with the UKSCA (UK Strength and Conditioning Association)
  • Masters Degree in Strength and Conditioning
  • BSc in Sports Science and Nutrition
  • ISAK Accredited Level 1 Anthropometrist (Body composition assessments)

As you can see, Pete has some serious knowledge to bring to the party, as well as a stack of great experience. He’s spent a lot of time working with high-level student athletes, with the Cardiff Mets Women’s football team, the Hampshire Cricket team and a England Basketball Academy in Southampton, where he specialises in strength and conditioning coaching for young players aged 15-19, preparing them for the rigours of a potential professional sports career.

With that kind of enthusiasm and experience behind him, Pete knows he can help you reach peak fitness, and get your body leaner, meaner and fit for life!


VK Gym FFT Classes – What to Expect

First, FFT is for everyone who wants to raise their fitness level, regardless of age or starting point. If you are pretty unfit at the moment, don’t worry – we will recommend some one-to-one sessions to start with to get you to a level where you can join in the group activities. We’ll concentrate on your body mechanics, getting you moving correctly and safely.

Most FFT classes will be coached in a group of 4-12:

  • we use the Air bikes, concept2 rower and concept2 ski erg
  • Barbells, Kettle bells, dumbbells, medicine balls
  • gymnastic equipment, rings, pull up rig

to give you a complete, high-intensity workout that delivers really good value for the effort you put in.

The main arena will be an open space in which to run and move freely, then you’ll find barbells and lifting equipment – we’ll work you up to power lifting before you know it! You’ll be working on gymnastics type movements such as pull-ups and hand stands, plus strength development exercises like Squats, Deadlifts, Over head presses and Bench press. Pleasantly accompanied by all the body weight exercise we love, Press Ups, Air squats, box jumps, sit ups and of course… BURPEES

You’ll be trained to use your body correctly – all the moves will use the correct body mechanics and form to ensure you avoid injury. Don’t worry about keeping up with everyone else if you’re not really confident in your ability. All the exercises are scalable so you will work at a level that suits you until you’re ready to step up.
